Even when all the stars are aligned to create wedding photography perfection, the X factor is you. The more relaxed you feel the more spontaneous you are and the more striking the photography will be.
Photographers agree that the best images are taken when clients are laughing, happy relaxed and engrossed in their day. If you chose a documentary or photo journalistic photographer your mood is particularly important. Whilst there’s no magic prescription for stress management on your day, if your day runs smoothly and on time it will help keep you on an even keel and worry free.
Planning is the key to keeping your day hassle free and helps to ensure that your photographer captures your day to perfection. This is one of a series of articles on how to keep your day just the way you want it.
* Hand over your cell phone to a bridesmaid. You really don’t have to be the point of contact for every question that crops up. A million minor questions can create more stress for you and chances are someone else can provide the answer.
*Scheduling your hair/makeup is crucial to keeping the timing on schedule, the stress down and the photographer able to maximize the use of their time. Schedule your hair/makeup in the middle of the group, not at the end. If you’re the last in line, the chance of things starting to run late get much greater.
*Everyone’s ready but you ….. that makes for stress and rushing and potential to start running late. If you’re hair and makeup’s finished, the photographer can capture you dressing and all the wonderful details at a relaxed pace. You’ll be happy with the wonderful photographic opportunities that your photographer can capitalize on, just by putting your own hair makeup in the middle of the lineup instead of the end.
*Photographers can do a lot if the flowers are handy. If possible, it’s helpful to have the flowers delivered to where ever you are getting dressed.
Shoes and jewelry. Put those on AFTER the dress is on. Why? Because it looks so gorgeous in those candid moments. The baggy sweatshirt look, not so much.
*Unpack your dress before the photographer arrives. Bridesmaids are there to help you, let them take care of that for you. Often the dress will be packed with bustle in place and will need to be un-bustled so the fabric can relax and not look wrinkled. It also means your photographer can get right down to work capturing the dress and wedding details so you can get dressed whenever you are ready to.
*Once again planning will get you everywhere. A time line and and checklist – such a good use of your time. If you need a great one, it’s a free download below. A general time line is plenty but getting you to start thinking about your photography and any specific shots you want in advance means you don’t have to worry about it on the day.
And most of all …
Discuss what you want with your vendors and be clear. You’ve hired them, now trust them to make your day everything you’ve envisioned. It’s your day and their job to make it happen. Let them do what they do best, and you to relax and enjoy your day
Stay stress free, have fun and be in the moment
